Plans!

It's been 2 months since the last update here, but there has been a lot of background scurrying during that time. My parents have been working with architect Spencer White on plans for a new house, and after much discussion, much more penciling-in of walls, cupboard space, bathtubs, doors, windows, and even lightswitches, it will be done this Friday! Hooray! Then they can take the plans to the city and apply for a building permit.

Next project: Finding a contractor.

Demolition Day!

It is done! The house is down!

It was quite an amazing experience for everyone there. There were tears and even screams (from the kids), and a whole lot of rain that kept the dust from covering the neighborhood. And let there be no doubt: heavy machinery can finish what a fire can begin - and in short time, too.

Pre-demolition

The asbestos removal guys worked a few days last week, are finishing up their work this very minute. The concrete cutter is almost finished cutting the foundation to separate the front steps from the rest of the house this morning. My dad is still busy removing flagstone from the foundation. We'll know in the next hour or so whether the demolition contractor will arrive at noon to take down the house, or whether he'll rearrange his schedule and take down a different job today and tomorrow, then be back on Wednesday and Thursday to take down our house!

Plea for help

It's becoming obvious that my parents cannot do this work alone. My dad now has two air-powered chisels, and we'll have some help from the Cowies this afternoon, but if anyone else can help on Friday, Saturday, or Monday, that's all the time we have left to save that beautiful stonework from demolition. Anyone up for some back-breaking work in 100-degree heat? If you're less than 70-years-old you're likely in better shape to do it than my dad is. The guilt is finally sinking in for me. Anyone else?
